Why Create a School Year Memory Book?

Imagine flipping through the pages of your memory book years from now, transported back to that captivating moment when you aced the science fair project or cheered your heart out at the homecoming game. A memory book serves as a time machine, offering glimpses into the past and reigniting the joy of those special occasions.

If your parents were anything like mine, when I reached the ripe age of 18 and moved out, I gained ownership of a box of my adolescent memories. For each elementary grade level, there were saved homework assignments, and classwork, spelling tests and art projects- a walk down memory lane when reopened, but I found myself unsure of what to save and what to toss. It certainly was enjoyable walking down memory lane, enjoying the weird-looking art projects and seeing my individuality create the person I am today, but I felt guilty when thinking about all I would be tossing. And then, Finley started his schooling career, and quickly the two or three pages of his first writings became ten, twenty and thirty pages deep. The art projects sent home quickly overwhelmed our fridge and I realized that if this is just VPK, technically year 0, what is this going to look like when he reaches middle school, or better yet, high school?! In my home now, there is not nearly enough space to be able to save more schoolwork and although I am somewhat forced to take a sort of minimalist approach, I also know that Finley and Hudson may enjoy having this same opportunity to walk down memory lane, one day. Thus came my school year memory book project.

Whether you opt for a scrap book type style and keep said pages or you follow the more digital approach, this memory book is yours and yours alone, to do how you best see fit! For me, I choose to merge the traditional charm with modern innovation thus creating a truly unique keepsake.

Digital Get Down

When the school year is just about to start, and the school supplies are being ordered, picked out, and sorted, I am quick to grab another fifty cent, two pocket, durable, folder for the school year to come- for me and my use only. This folder becomes the pre-school year memory book, and a way for me to hold onto what I am wanting to memorialize in digital form. As Finley comes home from school, from the first day to the very last, I go through his take-home-folder, and find myself sorting the reminance by which I wish to memorialize, and which I will be sending out with the trash. As the grade level changes, so do the assignments and test, projects and sent home paperwork, thus no year is ever the same. For VPK, I found myself saving a lot of letter writing and number writing, tracing and art work, whereas in first grade, there were lots of spelling tests, sight word tests, and full sentence writing activities. (Again what you choose to save and put in your school year memory book, is up to you and your discretion, but I seem to keep more than I use, just to be safe).

Scan, Scan, Scan Away

Obviously the point of this is to say goodbye to the mountain of keepsakes cluttering your kitchen counter top, so at the end of each quarter, or depending on the amount ff saved mementos, I take an hour or so to scan the saved memories and put them into a folder on my computer. This folder is a convenient treasure box, in dated order, so that what is completed in August can be separated from the same type of assignments completed and saved in May. Along with the scanned mementos, I also take the time to collect the pictures taken by me and my loved ones, images shared by the school via social media, and other digital mementos I wish to add, and save them to the folder- this creates a perfect timeline for when creating the photo book, and adds an sentimental aspect of seeing your babe change from quarter to quarter, semester to semester. These scan documents and re-saved photos, are then easily accessible when it comes to the next step, the print and ship.

Print and Ship

Once the school year has finished, and the mementos are scanned, I then check for which online printing company, has the best deals on photo books. A lot of online photo companies, offer photo books in a variety of sizes and covers, whether hard cover or lay-flat, leather or softcover, the decision is yours!! Then it is up to you to create the theme for your memory book that best fits your style!! I like to start with the beginning of the year, from the meet-the-teacher, to first day of school pictures, holiday concerts and award ceremonies, all of which are documented alongside saved mementos that I had scanned.

Friendships forged in school are often some of the most enduring bonds we create. Building a memory book means not only preserving your Childs own experiences but also capturing the essence of these relationships. From scribbled notes in yearbooks to shared photos, pages quickly become a tribute to the friendships that have shaped their journey.

The school year memory book isn't just a collection of memories; it's a legacy in the making. As the years pass, their memory book evolves into a chronicle of growth, achievements, and moments that define who they are. It's a tangible reminder of how far they've come and the milestones they've crossed along the way.

Tips for Crafting Your Memory Book

Whether you opt for a whimsical design, a minimalist approach, or a scrapbook-style arrangement, selecting a theme for your memory book adds coherence and flair to your collection of memories. Let your creativity shine through as you curate the elements that best represent their school year experience.

From concert tickets and play programs to doodles and napkin sketches, mementos add a touch of authenticity to the memory book. These tangible reminders bring back the sights, sounds, and even scents of moments long past, making their memories even more vivid and heartfelt.

Don't let the witty remarks of your Childs friends or the inspiring words of their teachers slip into oblivion. Jot down quotes, anecdotes, and inside jokes that capture the spirit of their school days. These verbal snapshots will infuse their memory book with personality and laughter.

In a digital age, incorporating technology into your memory book can elevate your storytelling. Merge traditional charm with modern innovation for a truly unique keepsake.

The Journey Begins Here

Are you ready to embark on the journey of preserving your children's school year memories in a delightful memory book? Gather the saved assignments and tests, stickers, photos, and most cherished keepsakes, and let the art of reminiscence unfold. Each page turned, each memory captured, is a step towards creating a timeless treasure that will warm your heart for years to come.

So go ahead, unleash your creativity, dive into the sea of nostalgia, and craft a school year memory book that encapsulates the essence of your Childs unforgettable journey.
