The Little Things They'll Never Remember (But I'll Never Forget)

There are moments in motherhood that everyone tells you to remember.

The first steps. The first words. The first day of school. Birthdays. Christmas mornings. Family vacations. And don't get me wrong... those moments deserve every picture, every video, every page in the baby book.

Paint-covered hands smear thick red, blue, gray, and yellow paint on white paper in a messy, energetic abstract art scene.

But lately, I've been wondering if the moments I'll miss the most are the ones no one ever thinks to write down.

The ordinary Tuesdays. The little things. The moments that quietly slip by while we're busy waiting for the "big" ones. Because one day, my boys won't remember climbing into my bed at 2 a.m. because they heard thunder. But I'll remember the weight of a sleepy little body curled against my side.

They won't remember asking me to watch them jump off the same step seventeen times. I'll remember cheering like it was the Olympics. They won't remember shouting, "Mom! Watch this!" every thirty seconds. I'll remember pretending to be surprised every single time. They won't remember how they mispronounced words or insisted on wearing rain boots with pajamas. They won't remember the sticky popsicle kisses, the tiny fingerprints on my windows, or how they somehow left a trail of Goldfish crackers through every room in the house.

But I will.

I'll remember little hands reaching for mine in parking lots without even thinking about it. The way they used to fit perfectly on my hip. How bedtime somehow required four hugs, three stories, two glasses of water, and one more question they absolutely couldn't wait until morning to ask.

I'll remember the way they looked for me in every crowd. The way they believed I could fix absolutely anything. Even when I couldn't. One day, they'll outgrow cartoons. They'll stop asking me to tuck them in. There will be a last bedtime story, a last trip to the playground, a last time they ask me to carry them because their legs are tired.

The hardest part?

We almost never know it's the last time, while we're living it.

Life doesn't announce those moments. It simply, keeps moving.

Motherhood has a funny way of making us believe the big milestones are where memories are made. But I'm starting to think that's backwards.

Maybe memories are built in the spaces between them.

In the grocery store conversations. The dance parties in the kitchen. The drives home from school. The Saturday mornings spent in pajamas until noon. The way they still yell, "Mom!" from another room... even though I'm only ten feet away. Those are the moments that quietly stitch a childhood together. And maybe they're stitching my heart together, too.

Years from now, my boys probably won't remember most of those ordinary days. They'll remember vacations. Birthday parties. Christmas mornings. But I'll remember Tuesday. The Tuesday when we laughed so hard milk came out someone's nose. The Tuesday when one of them slipped their hand into mine without saying a word. The Tuesday when our biggest adventure was a trip to Target and ice cream afterward.

Because those ordinary days... They were never ordinary to me. They were my favorite chapters.

So here's your reminder, Mama.

Take the pictures on birthdays. Celebrate the milestones. Cheer for every accomplishment.

But don't forget to notice the little things. Because one day... those tiny, forgettable moments might become the memories you treasure most.

And somehow, I think that's where the real magic has been all along.

XO, Kelleen
