So, how was your day?

Last August, Finley started his school journey, he started VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten). Finley attended his year of VPK at the elementary school where he will attend until Junior High. Voluntary Prekindergarten or VPK builds on the foundations set by preschool- the focus is on STEM in early education and gives children a jump start by preparing them for school and enhancing their pre-reading, pre-math, language and social skills. Finley thoroughly enjoyed going to school everyday and his teachers are AMAZING!

During the school year, I quickly learned that asking, "how was your day at school?" or "what all did you do at school today?" had a response that varied from the beginning of the school year to weeks into the year. At the beginning of the year, Finley would babble away, he had so much to say, so much to share, however it shortly turned into one-worded answers... but I knew he had more to share. There was so many things that we could talk about and he could share, so I started mixing up our conversation, and I was quickly learning all about his new friends, the new projects being completed in class, classroom gossip and even new info about his teachers and peers.

To keep in the loop with your kiddos school day, here are 25 questions I have found to be the most engaging!

  1. What is something that you did today, that you wish could happen every day?

  2. Who would you like to play with at recess tomorrow?

  3. What are you most excited to do at school tomorrow?

  4. What was the hardest thing about today?

  5. What special snack did you have today?

  6. What made you laugh today?

  25. Are you still learning about....

When it came to having an engaging conversation about school, I learned that pre-imputing the conversation with the basics, made it easier for him to remember things, to go into detail about the specifics of his day. I learned the more you actively listen and remember, the more you can use for the days to come (example, he would learn about reptiles for a week, sea animals for a week, specific numbers and letters each week so I knew on Friday it would be the end of that specific number set, letter set and learning subject, and that Monday would start fresh).

What are some questions that you ask your children to get them talking about their school day?

Cheers!!
